Gavin Evans

Gavin Evans was born in ’64 in the North East of England. He has photographed some of the most iconic names in popular culture; turning his lens on stars from the worlds of music, film and theatre, to capture intimate moments and candid portraits in his own distinctive style.

In 1995, during the production of the album Outside, David Bowie came to Evans' studio with long-time collaborator and friend Brian Eno to have his picture taken. The resulting photographs are some of the most widely reproduced and evocative images of Bowie. This memorable meeting of artistic spirits resulted in a series of photographs now referred to as "The Session".

Throughout a prolific career spanning decades, Evans had the chance to work with numerous celebrated artists like Iggy Pop, and Nick Cave to Ai Weiwei, Juliette Binoche, Gary Oldman, Harvey Keitel, Daniel Craig, Björk, and Peter Fonda.

Gavin Evans has contributed to esteemed publications such as The New York Times, Empire, Esquire, and The Guardian, among many others. His work is part of the collections of prestigious museums, including MoMA, The British Library, The Harpa, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Currently the artist lives and works in Berlin.

"I refuse to perpetuate the convention that the portrait captures the soul.

I do not possess powers of divination;

I am neither a priest, shaman nor soul thief.

My photographs are neither jinn nor juju.

I create man in my own image."
